Composting

Students will learn about decomposition, recycling, and reducing waste with hands-on observations and experiments with red wiggler worms. The activity will be tackled in 2 lessons of multiple parts:
Week 1:
  1. Composting: Students will be introduced to composting through discussion and explore the relationships of composting and recycling in helping to reduce waste.
  2. Red Wiggler Worms: Students will learn about red wiggler worms - what they do, where they live, and how they are important in composting.
  3. Worm Behaviors & Experiments: Students will make predictions on the conditions that worms prefer and test them out.
  4. Classroom Composting Worm Bin: Instructors will guide students in compiling the necessary materials to make a composting worm bin for the classroom.
Week 2:
  1. Discussion: Students will be reminded of the role of the worms and the reasons for composting.
  2. Compost Observations: Students will revisit the compost worm bin and make observations on the soil as well as the worms by observing the different stages of the life cycle that are present and carefully separate the worms from the soil to observe. After observations, the compost will be spread in a garden or around a tree.
  3. Dirt Cup Activity: Using various snack, students will create their own edible compost cup.

Pollination

In this week's lesson, students will explore the structure of flowers, the process of pollination, the relationship between plants and pollinators, and how pollination is important to our food supply. The topic will be introduced with questions about seeds and plant growth and broken up into 3 different activities:
  1. Parts of a Flower: Students will put together pieces of a flower and fill out a worksheet on the structure of flowers. They will also consider how the plant attracts pollinators.
  2. Pollinator/Flower Adaptation: Different flower shapes and properties as well as different pollinator profiles will be explored to see how plants and pollinators are adapted to each other.
  3. Bee Activity: Students will consider the importance of bees to supplying the food we eat by examining food at a BBQ.

Plant Life Cycle

In this week's lesson, students will explore the life cycle of plants. This lesson will be explored in three parts:
  1. Flower Puzzle: Students will watch a plant cycle video and make a plant cycle flower foldable to explain the stages of the plant cycle.
  2. Seed planting: Students will plant seeds and learn about what is required for a plant to grow, so that they can take care of a plant and watch it grow at home. 
  3. Botany supermarket: Students will learn about different edible parts of plants and look at the edible samples under a microscope.

Moving Plants

In this week's lesson, students will explore how plants use water to move and grow through concepts of osmosis and turgor pressure. The lesson will be broken up into main parts:
  1. Background: The concepts of turgor pressure and osmosis will be introduced and discussed.
  2. Turgor Activity: Students will explore the role of turgor pressure on plants by examining a balloon with various amounts of air.
  3. Osmosis Activity: Osmosis will be explored by placing potato slices in tap water and salt water and observing any changes in the length of the potato slice.
  4. Live plant movement: Students will watch live plants move and connect the movement to osmosis and turgor pressure.

Transport in Plants

In this week's lesson, students will learn how plants transport water and nutrients by observing capillary action in celery stalks. The exploration in capillary action will be broken up in 4 parts:
  1. Background: Students will be led in a discussion about the transport of water and nutrients in plants.
  2. Microscope activity: Students will observe prepared stained celery stalks under the microscope
  3. Capillary Action: After observing water levels in different sized tubes, students will participate in a graphing activity to see how the tube size affects the water level.
  4. Colored Celery: Students will observe celery stalks in water with food coloring over the course of several days to see the effect on the color of the leaves.
